Demonstrating MIG Welding

Have you thought about learning to weld, but you're too afraid to start? No need to fear, Forney Industries is here with everything you need to get started.

In the past welding was a skill for professionals, but thankfully times have changed. In 2018 Forney Industries introduced a line of machines called Forney Easy Weld, which made it possible for just about anyone to begin welding without the element of fear. With the help of these machines, and these handy tips, you can be welding like a professional in no time!

What You Need to Get Started

1. A Process

Before you jump right in, you have to decide what what kind of welding you would like to practice. For beginner welders, it is typically recommended that you begin with MIG welding. However, there are a couple other varieties of welding to consider. The table below will help you choose what process is right for you.

MIG Welding

Stick (SMAW) Welding
Stick Welding Symbol
TIG (GTAW) Welding
TIG Welding Symbol
Easy to use Versatile Precision welding
Longer continuous welding Welds a variety of metals quickly and easily Highest quality of welds
Flux-core (FCAW) is typically used outside or in less than ideal conditions Does not require shielding gas  High skill and difficult to master
Solid wire (GMAW) requires the use of shielding gas and cleaner material Can be used in less than ideal conditions and on dirty metals Requires inert shielding gas (Argon/Helium)
Each electrode type has unique operating characteristics  Cleanliness of base material and filler metal are critical

2. A Welder

As we've previously mentioned, The Forney Easy Weld line of welders are a great value, designed for beginner welders or do-it-yourselfers with small jobs around the house. For less than $500, these machines are the perfect accessory to your work bench. The table below will help you decide which Forney Easy Weld Machine is right for you.

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Although welding has become easier to learn, there is still an element of risk that comes with this skill. The following PPE will keep you safe and confident during any types of metalworking.

Eye Protection

Eye protection is possibly the most important PPE gear to remember. The UV rays from the arc produced while welding can be extremely harmful to the unprotected eye. If you're not protecting your eyes from the arc, you are at risk of a hazard called flash burn. Flash burns are like sunburns to the eye. They are incredibly painful, but can be avoided by wearing the following proper eye protection;

Safety Glasses
Forney offers several safety glasses to fit a variety of needs. These safety glasses are extremely durable, offer 99.9% UV protection, and are ideal for all day comfort. Safety glasses are meant to be worn underneath your welding helmet for added protection from flying sparks.
